In these training exercises, which have the objective to strength the interoperability between both navies, for the first time, a nuclear submarine participates.
These exercises are performed within the 200th anniversary of the cooperation agreements between the governments of Colombia and United States of America.
The interoperability exercises between the Colombian and American Navy were performed 70 nautical miles (130 kilometers) from Cartagena, and for the very first time, a nuclear submarine participated: USS Minnesota.
Both navies strengthened their antisubmarine war procedures to increase their interoperability and reinforced cooperation for peace, security defense of the west hemisphere, freedom of navigation and national sovereignty.
Different capacities where proven during these war exercises, where submarine and surface units from both countries participated, such as: the nuclear submarine USS Minnesota and oceanic submarine ARC “Pijao”, USS Billings, frigates ARC “Independiente” and ARC “Almirante Padilla”, and Colombian and American aircrafts.
Colombia’s participation in international operations as global partner of NATO, contributes to the collective construction of a timely, relevant and adequate response to global challenges regarding security and defense. These combine naval exercises are one of the optimal instruments for the regional and global governance. Since 1960, Colombia has participated actively in multinational naval exercises, such as the UNITAS operation, RIMPAC, Diesel Electric Submarine Initiative (DESI), PANAMAX and TRADEWINDS. Also, Colombia participated in the Korean War as part of the Multinational Force of the UN during the 50’s and recently, during the operations against piracy in the African Horn, as part of the Naval Force of the European Union, Atalanta Operation, and the Maritime Force of NATO in the Ocean Shield Operation. In addition to the above, Colombia leads the Naval Campaign Orion.
The Colombian Navy will keep performing combine naval exercises with different countries, according with current cooperation agreements in which navies complement their capacities to tackle threats and common challenges regarding the security and defense of the nation.
